• We will be meeting at Ballston Metro East Falls Church Metro Stop at 6 a.m. 5:45 a.m. on Monday, January 23, 2012. We not will provide round trip metro fare cards.
• We have a few NO tickets left for the March, please contact the youth office to reserve your ticket. All spots must be confirmed by turning in a permission slip.
• Bring money for lunch at Potbelly’s or Five Guys. Due to the difficulty in acquiring food the day of the March, please bring snacks and a bag lunch.
• We should return to Ballston East Falls Church Metro (by Bishop O’Connell High School) by 5:30 p.m.
• Life is Very Good hats are available for sale for $20 (Please make checks out to the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More), as supplies last.

Paintball at Hogback Mountain
September 24, 2011, 12:00 Noon – 6:00 p.m.

In the spirit of Saints Michael and Sebastian, we will have a couple of good rounds of paintball battles at Hogback Mountain. We are feeling out interest, so please let us know if you are attending as soon as possible (We need 8 people to sign up by Monday, September 12th for us to go forward).

We will meet at Noon (eat lunch beforehand) in front of the Cathedral. We’ll carpool to head over to Hogback Mountain (Leesburg, VA) play a couple of games. We should be back by 6 p.m.

You MUST have a permission slip, medical release (if you have submitted a release after July 2011, you do not need a new one) and payment submitted prior to the meet time on September 24. Join us for a night with your friends for the beginning of the year with some Pizza and Bowling. We’ll meet at the Cathedral to carpool over to the Fort Myer Bowling Alley at 6:30 p.m. We’ll have dinner at the alley with a couple of games.

Diocesan Day at Kings Dominion will be on Friday, August 5th, 2011. We will meet at 7:15 a.m. and arrive back at the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More around 11:30 p.m.

Please wear modest clothing as we will be attending Mass at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. Also, please bring money for lunch, dinner, souvenirs or pay-per experience activities, a water bottle, sun screen (SPF 30+) and wear comfortable tennis shoes.

This trip will be open to rising 8th graders to graduating seniors and we will take people on a first come, first served basis. All payments & permission slips are due on Sunday, July 31, 2011. We always need parent/adult drivers, if you are a parent who can drive, please contact the youth office.

The Scoop at St. Thomas More is a bi-monthly youth group meeting where we meet up for Dinner followed by a discussion and activity. It’s all very chill.

Join us for the next one on Sunday, July 31, 2011. We will meet on the Grassy Knoll (weather permitting, or in the School Gym, Fr. Lee Hall). Dinner starts at 6:00 p.m.

DISCUSSION
Our discussion will talk about a real world situation with the Catholic Charities of Minnesota. For years, the St. Anthony’s residence in St. Paul, Minnesota has been serving late-stage alcoholic men  in the Twin Cities area. Funded by the State of Minnesota and operated by the Catholic Charities of St. Paul & Minneapolis.

It is not a treatment facility, in actuality, they are allowed to drink in their residence. They receive a check of $89 a month and they can spend it on whatever they want — including alcohol. St. Anthony’s Residence is called a “wet house” with the idea that “it is safer and cheaper to have these men drinking in a controlled environment than out on the cold Minnesota streets.”

Do you agree with the philosophy of the “wet house” and St. Anthony’s Residence? What is the balance of being charitable and being proactive in handling addiction? In what other ways can you apply this situation?
